Abstract

Free chickens lay more eggs – boosting research productivity through escapism

In their day-to-day work, researchers operate like birds in a cage, locked in a cage of their own making. In order to allow their creativity to soar, escapism plays an important role. Our research focused on active escapism, which assumes that to break down barriers, the researcher switches from an everyday activity (research) to an alternative activity (hobby). The researcher's journey is often not a solitary one. Teams of researchers, colleagues working together, who, in releasing their creative energies, have a collective experience, which can be interpreted as a kind of collective escapism. We used researcher introspection to gain a deeper understanding of our attempts to soar towards escapism and to identify the individual and social factors that contribute to it. We focused on the experience of play as a decisive force of disembodiment. Thus, escapism was examined in the context of playing board games.
