Abstract

Analysis of Western- and Eastern-Europen business universities’ mission statements in terms of sustainability

Nowadays organisations place more and more emphasis on sustainable operations, so universities are also increasingly challenged to contribute to sustainable development. The aim of this paper is to explore the sustainability-related content of the mission statements of European business universities and to compare the sustainability attitudes of universities in Eastern and Western Europe, which is one of the main novelties of this paper. The research will examine 100-100 university mission statements per region using content analysis, identifying the SDGs that appear in the mission statements, the university stakeholders, and whether universities specifically articulate to educate responsible leaders in their mission statements. Western European universities' missions focus on community development and solving social problems, with a greater focus on well-being and the natural environment, while Eastern European universities have a greater focus on regional and national development. Western European universities tend to promote the values of equal opportunities and openness, while Eastern European universities put more emphasis on the needs of the labour market in their missions. Among potential partners, in the Western ones the focus is more on companies, while in the Eastern ones the public sector, academic communities and the labour market are mentioned more in missions.
