Abstract
Digital Nudges: Overview and Systematic Literature Review
Decision making and human behaviour has been of interest to psychologists and economists alike for decades. One strand of research focuses on how to persuade people to adopt new behaviours or ideas. The digital nudge is a type of choice architecture used to influence human behaviour in the digital environment. In our systematic literature review, we examine the current state of research on digital nudges. In our study, we summarise the results in the field through an analysis of 64 articles. Our results show a lack of research focusing on the long-term effects of nudges, with a predominance of studies using surveys and laboratory experiments. It would be worthwhile for future research to focus on evaluation in real-life situations. Methodologically, it would be important to incorporate both quantitative and qualitative methods into research design. The review also highlights the need to adopt a standardised nomenclature for the categorisation of nudges. It is also important to underline that for future research, it is recommended to consider the aspects of government regulations, and technological and ethical dimensions as well.
