Abstract

The consequences of changes and crises on domestic SMEs and their responses – In depth interview research findings presented for three service sectors

In the last three years, domestic companies have faced a number of challenges: not only the crisis caused by the coronavirus, but also the consequences of the economic crisis caused by war tensions. In many cases, the crisis forces companies to rethink their activities and find the right adaptation or even escape strategies to bring about change.
In this paper, we focus primarily on domestic small and medium-sized enterprises, as the vast majority of companies operating in Hungary fall into this category. They also play an important role in generating income, investment, jobs, employment and even foreign capital for the country.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are particularly vulnerable due to their size, often limited experience, and limited financial resources and reserves. Therefore, we have studied several service sectors that have been affected differently by the crisis. Our goal is to explore the impact of the crises of recent years on Hungarian businesses. Therefore, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic, we also studied the impact of the current economic crisis, which emerged as a result of market and war-related tensions. We conducted qualitative research, including in-depth interviews with 25 domestic small and medium enterprises. During the interviews, we explored how the companies we interviewed responded to the crisis and what changes they made in response.
