Abstract

Analysis of electric scooter usage patterns in Hungary

Due to efforts to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, mobility systems are changing across Europe, and electric scooters are becoming increasingly popular in Hungary. These new alternative means of transport have low energy requirements, low environmental impact, and take up little road space, so they are the preferred choice for shorter journeys, usually less than 15 km. Although electric scooters have many advantages in urban transport beyond the above, their perception is mixed among both users and non-users. In 2022, we conducted a survey on non-users' attitudes toward electric scooters, and therefore, in the current phase of our exploratory research, we focused on the group of electric scooter users. In March-April 2023, we used an online questionnaire to survey the scooter use attitudes of members of the Hungarian e-scooter community and analyzed the data using SPSS software. The results show that although more and more people are choosing to buy their own scooters, the current regulation on e-scooters is still inadequate. The analysis of the responses led to the conclusion that the most important prerequisite for successful integration is to clarify the rules for users (where to ride, where to park, whether to wear protective equipment, whether to insure) and to build the necessary infrastructure.
