Abstract

Study on personalised dietary counseling in Europe

One form of personalized nutrition is dietary counseling. This has become an attractive business opportunity, as evidenced by the large number of market offerings based on providing these services in recent decades (KISS – FARKAS, 2021; RONTELTAP et al., 2013). Previous research has highlighted that consumers have several doubts about following personalized nutrition (see, for example, STEWART-KNOX et al., 2009). Based on this, the question arises whether there is a viable business model for such services at all. As a first step, we conducted a systematic internet search to gather personalized nutritional counseling services that meet five criteria: they offer the service in English; they are related to nutrition; they show some level of personalization; they offer a product or service; and they use some consumer information to personalize the product or service. The second step was an expert content analysis of the providers’ websites. It can be concluded that in the European market, personalized nutritional counseling based on lifestyle and phenotypic information is still the most popular form, and the number of services based on nutrigenomics is still negligible.
