Dear Colleagues,
On February 2, 2024, we held our research and educational methodology workshop, during which we were able to attend interesting and useful presentations. One of the closing presentations raised questions regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the process of thesis writing.
The message of the presentation was not primarily about complete prohibition, but rather about exploring possible benefits. The presentation aimed to highlight that there are elements and tasks of thesis writing to which supervisors would find the use of AI ethical – so why don't we assist students in this?
The speaker, Sándor Huszár, also issued a call to the audience for the development of a guide intended to assist thesis supervisors and students in marketing. This guide would help supervisors determine when it is appropriate to recommend the use of AI to students and how to prevent potential abuses. Additionally, a separate summary would aid participants in assisting students, primarily in gathering inspiration and meeting formal requirements.
During and after the presentation, several attendees expressed their intention to collaborate with the speaker on the development of the guide. The creation of the guide would be preceded by a preliminary survey among students and supervisors at Hungarian higher education institutions, and then the guide would be presented at the 2024 EMOK Conference by the authors.
If anyone would like to join the initiative, please inform Sándor Huszár via email of your intention to participate: huszar.sandor@eco.u-szeged.hu (Subject: "Use of AI in thesis writing").
