Abstract
The challenges of the Hungarian local television
Local television stations across the country, with their multi-billion-forint assets and the thousands of people they employ, are one of the country's largest media companies producing public service content, even though most of them only broadcast in a minimal reception area, only a few hours a week of self-edited broadcasts. They produce as many edited programs for their audience as there are events in the surrounding areas.
The ongoing technological changes, media convergence, digitization, the strengthening of new platforms, and the changes in consumer and viewer attitudes together create an environment around local televisions that requires them to change in order to survive. Can local television remain next to linear broadcasting, or should it be moved to online platforms, transforming the editorial work as well?
The solution may lie in their relationship with the viewers, in the use of new platforms, which some media in the field have already entered. The article presents the background and experiences of this challenge.
