Abstract

Mainstreaming environmentally conscious consumption: international and Hungarian experiences

The emergence of an environmentally conscious consumers depends to a large extent on the level of social and economic development of the country as well as on the regulatory environment of the region. In our research, after presenting the previous studies and related theoretical approaches, we interpreted the evolution of environmentally conscious behavior using the PEB (Pro-Environmental Behavior) scale and comparing it with NAGY's (2018) results, using a student sample. Recycling, selective waste collection and consumption of environmentally friendly products are the most common activities in the sample. Compared to results from 2018, we found a difference in the sequence of consumption reduction and cancellation, demand modification, and environmental complaint and protest. Our results are considered forward-looking because understanding sustainable consumer behaviour plays a central role in the paradigm shifts in society’s approach to environmental problems.
