Abstract

What determines how I experience VR? Personality and VR

What determines how we experience virtual reality? Exploring the relationship of personality and VR is increasingly urgent as immersive systems become part of our everyday lives. Present review examines which personality traits and individual differences shape VR experience, engagement, and intention to use the technology.
We conducted a PEO-based systematic literature research in the Web of Science, Scopus, and Academic Search Complete databases, during which, after filtering, 105 peer-reviewed studies published between 2003 and 2025 were included in the analysis. The number of publications increases sharply from 2017, peaks in 2021 and 2024, most of them were published in psychology and HCI journals, but the presence of marketing, tourism, and educational methodology is also increasing. The theoretical framework of the studies is most often provided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), UTAUT, flow theory and the Big Five personality model; methodologically, latent variable modeling (PLS-SEM, CFA) dominates. According to the results, extraversion, openness and sensation seeking strengthen the presence and flow experience, which mediates the intention to use and reuse; on the other hand, neuroticism and high anxiety are associated with a higher risk of cybersickness and lower satisfaction. The review highlights that the subjective quality and acceptance of the VR experience are highly person-dependent, which justifies the need for personalized VR content and adaptive design solutions. The reviewed literature suggests that understanding the VR experience is only possible with user-centered models that incorporate psychological aspects.
