Abstract
Motivations and Limitations in Student Research Societies’ Mentoring
University Student Research Societies (SRS) play a significant role in the scientific socialization of students, facing numerous challenges on both the student and faculty side. The aim of the study was to explore what factors help and hinder quality SRS work. During the research, we surveyed the opinions of teachers and lecturers using a semi-qualitative/semi-quantitative research method. The majority of the questions were open-ended, allowing respondents to freely express their opinions and suggestions. This study focuses on faculty members' motivation and problems, negative experiences and workload, as well as development and motivational opportunities regarding the SRS.
Based on the feedback, the successful operation of the Student Research Societies largely depends on student motivation, faculty support and institutional background. Both their own and student benefits play an important role in the motivation of mentors. A significant number of instructors mentioned aspects that pose a problem or question their participation in the SRS (such as the significant time investment). Professional and financial recognition of mentorship could be an incentive for them, which should be linked to quality. In the opinion of the mentors, more preparation, methodological support and clear information would be needed for students. Refining and making the evaluation system more consistent would strengthen professional credibility. Developing SRS participation therefore can only be achieved through the joint work of students, teachers and organizers.
