Abstract

Motivations and barriers to using lifestyle apps based on the experience of an exploratory study

The aim of present research is to explore the experiences of using lifestyle (LS) apps, with a focus on motivations and barriers. We conducted four focus group interviews with students studying in the Bachelor program of Sport and Recreation Management. Qualitative research was conducted to investigate the use of LS applications and the experiences and evaluation aspects related to the apps. The results of the focus group research indicated that sports and fitness apps were the most popular among the participants, and online and offline evaluations contributed to the selection of the right app. Evaluation criteria included usefulness, features, free access and accuracy. Many of the subjects reported positive impacts through improved physical and mental health. In addition, the authors found that the main reasons for non-use were personal, technical and usability. Further research is needed to investigate the relationship between factors influencing the use of LS apps and current behaviour and continued use, using a larger sample and a quantitative research method.
