Abstract

New Pathways to Airport Inclusion: Best Practices and Challenges in Supporting Individuals with Hidden Disabilities

As part of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), this study examines how the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower (HDS) program might improve the airport customer experience for people with hidden disabilities. Airports can make travel more inclusive and accessible by adding specially trained employees, sensory-friendly environments, and proactive assistance. Budapest Airport is an excellent example of how such measures can be effectively implemented, showcasing best practices for supporting travelers with non-visible disabilities. This research aims to advance the theoretical discourse on disability-inclusive travel by addressing the underexplored domain of hidden disabilities – those that are not immediately visible and are frequently marginalized in mainstream transportation studies. Integrating the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program into the service processes of Budapest Airport is explored through on-site fieldwork and in-depth expert interviews. Special attention is given to the planning phase and the challenges faced during the implementation process. As a case study, the investigation highlights the importance of inclusive service design in meeting the needs of individuals with invisible disabilities.
