Abstract
Helping students in career planning: Investigation of a data-driven academic advising platform
Academic advising serves as essential in improving student retention, learning achievement, and personal growth in higher education. Addressing the persistent global issue of student dropout rates, effective academic advising systems have become crucial tools for improving student retention in higher education institutions. As digital platforms and services spread at universities following COVID-19, understanding the factors that influence of digital service acceptance is crucial.
This research investigates the factors influencing student adoption of MyCorvinus Navigator, a data-driven, technology-based academic advising service. A qualitative investigation was undertaken first. The primary observations about influencing factors included the need for mentoring, perceived personalization, lack of information, and the complexity of system outcome interpretation. Applying the findings from qualitative research and existing literature, we developed a theoretical model that was subsequently tested using structural equation modeling. Data for the analysis was collected from a questionnaire completed by 181 students. Following hypothesis testing, performance expectation indicates a direct influence on behavioral intention, whereas effort expectancy does not. Personalization significantly impacts both performance expectancy and effort expectancy. The lack of information and the complexity significantly affect effort expectancy, however they do not significantly impact performance expectancy. Conversely, the need for interaction significantly influences performance expectancy, but it has no significant influence on effort expectancy. These findings emphasize the necessity of incorporating both human-centered and technology elements in academic advising services.
