Abstract

The role of self-congruity in the visual processing of hedonic and utilitarian attributes

The study investigates the role of visual processing of hedonic and utilitarian product attributes in self-congruity within an online shopping environment, using two popular drugstore websites and eye-tracking technology. Fifteen university students participated in the experiment, completing two shopping tasks of varying complexity on both websites. The analysis of quantitative eye-tracking data (average viewing time and number of fixations) revealed that hedonic attributes were observed for significantly longer than utilitarian ones on both websites. Additionally, for products that resonated with the ideal self-image, visual attention to hedonic attributes significantly increased on both platforms. The study highlights that hedonic and utilitarian product features can influence self-congruity, particularly in online contexts that emphasize hedonic experiences.
