Abstract

How Do Small Town Leaders Evaluate Their Settlements? – The Relationship Between Problem Perception and Satisfaction

Small towns, as central hubs of the country's rural areas, play a key role in sustaining the local economy and ensuring the quality of rural life. In recent years, their role and future have been recurring topics in professional debates on regional development and settlement marketing.
Hungary’s small towns possess diverse development opportunities and face various challenges that appear in the complex interplay of economic competitiveness, infrastructural conditions, local community life, and resident satisfaction. Significant differences can be observed among small towns based on their distinct characteristics, economic status, and development priorities, which directly affect the everyday quality of life of residents and the potential for future growth.
An objective assessment of the situation of these settlements not only provides a foundation for defining development directions but also contributes to more efficient use of resources, the design of targeted support programs, and the strengthening of public participation. The current cluster analysis helps to uncover differences between individual small towns, identify the greatest challenges, and highlight the strengths upon which future developments can be based.
