Abstract
Analysis of factors influencing selective waste collection in a high school sample
Recycling is a cornerstone of sustainable development, and its effective implementation depends on the uptake of selective waste collection. In Hungary, on 1 July 2023, waste management tasks were taken over by a concession company, which places particular emphasis on encouraging environmentally conscious behaviour among the population. One of the key elements of effective environmental education and behaviour shaping is social communication, which can contribute to a positive image of selective collection and increase active participation. The aim of this study is to explore the motivating and inhibiting factors of selective waste collection through the example of a secondary school community in a county seat in Hungary. The research is based on a questionnaire survey of students, teachers and institutional staff. Analyses were conducted using descriptive statistical methods and relationship analyses, with particular attention to the correlations between demographic characteristics and attitudes. The results show that attitudes towards separate waste collection are mainly influenced by information and infrastructure conditions. The research is also relevant from a practical point of view, as it can help to identify target groups among which targeted marketing communication and environmental education can be effective in encouraging environmentally conscious behaviour.
