Abstract
Three years, three surveys: changes in the social acceptance of electric vehicles
Mobility solutions that place a smaller burden on the environment are becoming increasingly accessible and simultaneously more popular among consumers. In our research, we examine public perception of fully electric vehicles an innovation that seeks to replace long-established and functional petrol- and diesel-powered cars. Although these traditional internal combustion vehicles are technically mature, they no longer meet the growing demand for sustainability. No matter how modern a petrol or diesel car may be, its operation emits pollutants into the air, contributing to environmental degradation. The problem is further exacerbated in countries like Hungary, where most consumers cannot afford the most modern conventional vehicles; as a result, the ageing car fleet emits even more harmful substances. In contrast, electric vehicles do not emit pollutants during operation neither when new nor as they age. Still, such vehicles often entail compromises that deter many from replacing their conventional cars with an electric one. Nonetheless, scientific curiosity persists, what do people really think about this technology and how they feel about those who use such cars? How and in what direction these opinions have changed in 3 years? In this study, we present how opinions about electric vehicles and their users have evolved based on the results of surveys conducted in 2022, 2024, and 2025, each involving 1,000 participants and representative of the Hungarian adult population.
