Abstract

The impact of crises on consumer behavior

In our research, we examine the impact on consumer behavior of three crises affecting Hungary with different structures: the post-transition recession, the 2008 global financial crisis, and the complex crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. We seek to answer whether recurring patterns can be identified in consumer responses to crises of different origins and whether these patterns persist in the period following stabilization. The research uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the structural characteristics and impact mechanisms of crises at the micro and macro levels. Our findings so far indicate that during periods of economic growth, consumption remains relatively stable, in line with the basic assumptions of economic theories of consumption, while in times of crisis, it responds quickly and sensitively to economic and psychological shocks. During periods of crisis, households pursue coping strategies that vary according to their financial situation, but are homogeneous within each group. Some of the newly emerging consumption patterns persist even after stabilization.
